Armed Forces Program
Adaptive
Adventures is honored to be working with Walter Reed Army
Medical Center(WRAMC) and Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC),
to provide sports rehabilitation programs for those service
members who have received severe injuries, leading to a permanent
disability, while fighting the Global War on Terrorism. Thanks
to our donors, the severely wounded service members receive
these services free of charge, including the costs of participation
of a family member.
Joel Berman, our Executive Director, received a Letter of Appreciation from James K. Gilman, Brigadier General Medical Corps, Commanding, thanking Adaptive Adventures for enabling Wounded Warriors to attend the Winter Mountain Ski Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, from March 10-15, 2006. Adaptive
Adventures provides a variety of opportunities for our dedicated
service members and their families to experience everything
life has to offer through outdoor sports and recreation. This
includes (but is not limited to): Alpine and
Nordic Skiing, Snowboarding, Cycling, Handcycling, Whitewater
Rafting, Kayaking, Sailing, Water-Skiing and Wakeboarding,
and Adventure Trips. Programs are conducted primarily in the
Chicago and Denver areas and at sites throughout the USA.
Why
is the Adaptive Adventures Armed Forces Program
important?
These
soldiers, like all individuals suffering a traumatic injury,
are going through a very difficult time. They were warriors,
athletic and the majority are of a very young age. This sudden,
traumatic change in physical ability makes service members
vulnerable to psychological and emotional, as well as physical
trauma, which severely impacts them and their families.
What
they need is something NOW and in the FUTURE that will show
them the promise of a bright and active future. Sport and
the Adaptive Adventures Team provides this. With our ability
to provide the proper adaptive equipment and trained instructors,
they can successfully participate in a wide range of sports
and recreation activities on a regular basis. Often learning
the fundamentals of a sport - almost any sport - in ONE day.
This immediate success provides a foundation for the development
of a positive self-image and outlook on life.
How
Can I Support the Adaptive Adventures Armed Forces Program?
"I
am a service member with a disability (OIF/OEV/Afghanistan/Global
War On Terrorism. How do I participate"?
